Barcode labels are attached to each significant component within a product. A serial or batch number is assigned to that product which is then barcoded using a permanent label on the product case, pallet or outer container. As each batch is made the components are scanned as they are mounted together with the batch number so that by the time the finished product reaches quality control, a complete traceable bill of materials for each product has been built. This process applies equally to commodity products such as food or engineering products with individual serialised components. The bill of materials can also include the packaging required depending on how the lines are set up. The products are packed in cartons, barcode labelled and then transferred to pallets with a further barcode pallet label. The PASS software then traces all items on the pallet down to component level. The barcode equipment used on the assembly line are either portable or fixed point scanners networked along the various assembly points. The barcode scans from product to carton to pallet are done with wireless scanners which update the database in real time from barcoded production and process sheets.
