Supported Label Printers
The labelling modules in all PASS barcode tracking software support any thermal transfer printer with a Windows printer driver.
What model should I get?
The size of the printer to select depends on the volume of labels that need to be produced. As a rough guide if the volume per annum is 'thousands' then a small desktop will do .
If the volume is hundreds of thousands of labels then a larger industrial model will be needed. In general terms Pass Locator applications will normally only need a small desktop whereas PASS Stock Controller often requires the larger industrial models.
What media should I use?
There are two types of printer - Direct thermal and Thermal transfer. The direct thermal printers tend to be less expensive but use chemically treated labels. The opposite is the case for thermal transfer.
What is the price range and who supplies them?
A label specialist is the place to start - a company who supplies both labels, ribbons and printers who can then match the hardware and software. Price start around £100 for a very small desktop through several thousand pounds for a large industrial label printer. What are the pitfalls?
The main concern is the choice of label substance for the application and matching it to the printer and selecting appropriate ribbons that will print properly. For example an Asset label needs to be permanent and therefore probably hardwaring polyester with a matching ribbon whereas stock labels can be done with a direct thermal printer as they have a shorter shelf life.
